Oil is a slow drying medium. That is both an advantage and a disadvantage. I tend to use glazes at first and very dry paint at the end. Landscapes take a long time to complete and impasto painting require a long curing time before they can be varnished. Abstract oils can sometimes take months to complete and sometimes only hours. The trick is to like it the next day. That happens more these days. Landscapes and realistic or impressionist art requires a “motif”, a something to paint. Abstract art require no motif. It is the art of discovery, of going somewhere with a destination unknown. Oil paintings are my principal form of expression. I like the messiness of them.
